Holiday safely this summer

A lovely relaxing time lies ahead of us, summer is on its way. Most of us dream of enjoying the longer daylight hours, warm sun, refreshing bathing and green lawns. Some prefer the sun lounger or hammock, while others find it impossible to relax by taking it easy. They have to be on the go the whole time: reorganising their kitchen, building a garage, working on their holiday home, patching up their car or even redecorating the whole house. Suddenly, a whole host of ‘holiday-makers’ are busy getting out their toolboxes and doing for themselves what they would otherwise rely on professional craftsmen to do.

Actually it’s not so strange. Bearing in mind the cost to a private individual of bringing in the professionals, but also the number of DIY programmes on TV that try to convince us that we mere mortals can do it ourselves. After all, it looks so easy on the box, doesn’t it? On the other hand, what they frequently fail to mention on these programmes is how important it is to use personal protective equipment, like the professionals do. Look at the number of injuries to holiday-makers our accident and emergency departments have to deal with during the holiday periods. DIY enthusiasts who were “only” sawing, grinding, drilling, cutting, welding, trimming, lifting, carrying or some other activity for which a professional would obviously have safety equipment. For the simple reason that it involves the risk of personal injury.

Protective equipment is safe and comfortable to use. In many cases, the job is both easier and quicker when you use the same sort of equipment the professionals use. The mere fact that you avoid injuring yourself is surely reason enough. Or would you rather waste precious holiday time sitting in the waiting room of your local A&E?
