For hands, this is one of the most dangerous places in the world

The wind is blowing at 20 m/sec. and the rig is moving 7 metres from wave peak to trough. It’s cold and wet, and everything is covered in oil. Your job is to load the drill pipes. Are you wearing gloves? What kind?

A recent study revealed that between 46% and 48% of personal injuries on oil rigs involve the hands. Heavy lifts, oily and sticky equipment, cold and damp conditions, and impact and crushing accidents are all risk factors for the hands. The resultant injuries are painful and frequently result in a period of sick leave.

Oil platforms are not just some of the world’s most dangerous workplaces – they are also some of the most dangerous places for your hands.

With this in mind, Ejendals, one of the leading companies in the world for hand protection, decided to improve hand protection for workers in the offshore industry.
Our vision – zero injuries to hands and feet – guides everything we do, including the development of new, improved protection for oil rig workers.

The question we were faced with was: what needs to be improved? So, we just asked workers on oil rigs, and they gave us some important clues about how to reduce injuries to hands:

Impact protection needs to be improved

Impact protection in gloves is incredibly important for off-shore workers. A lot of hand injuries are caused by items falling onto the hands or by the hands getting crushed – both significant risks in a workplace that is in constant motion. Here is what workers told us: The impact protection in our current gloves is located in the ridges on the top of the glove. Oil and dirt gets stuck in those places, making the gloves stiff and less comfortable. There is also a risk of the glove getting stuck due to the impact protection.

Gloves need to be waterproof and provide protection from cuts

It may seem obvious that a glove for use out on the sea should be waterproof, but that wasn’t always the case. Another important function of gloves for off-shore workers is to protect them from cut injuries.

Softer, lighter and more comfortable, please!

Although oil rigs are one of the most dangerous workplaces in the world, workers there want comfort and safety, just like everyone else.

With that in mind, our glove designers got to work on our new line of gloves.
The results of their efforts can now be seen in our new, top-of-the-line premium gloves in the Tegera ® Dynamic Strength Collection. They have been specially designed for the off-shore industry and have a number of new features that we know will be much appreciated out at sea.

The impact protection is situated on the inside of the glove, so that the outer part is completely smooth. All of the gloves in the collection are soft, comfortable, lightweight and two of them are waterproof, all of them with varying degrees of cut protection, depending on the wearer’s needs.

We are confident that they will make oil platforms a safer place for your hands!
