Hoe verrassend het ook klinkt, Anja begon haar carrière niet achter de barbecue.
"Niet veel mensen weten dit," zegt ze, "maar ik ben een gediplomeerd Pilates-instructeur. We hadden een kleine blog met recepten op mijn Pilates-website www.anjaauer.de - inclusief enkele barbecuegerechten. Ik kreeg gelijk heel veel reacties: Je zou een YouTube-kanaal over barbecueën moeten beginnen!"
Die aanmoediging was de aanleiding voor de oprichting van Die Frau am Grill - nu één van de plekken voor BBQ-inspiratie in Duitsland en daarbuiten. Anja's vroege succes kwam op een moment dat online informatie over barbecueën nog relatief zeldzaam was.
"Nu is dat anders - bijna iedereen in Duitsland met een barbecue heeft wel een Instagram- of YouTube-account. Maar destijds was de belangstelling en de feedback écht bemoedigend."
Tegenwoordig combineert ze haar BBQ-activiteiten nog steeds met Pilateslessen en verzorgt ze zes online-sessies per week. "Het houdt me met beide benen op de grond," zegt ze met een glimlach.

When asked about the biggest safety challenges at the grill, Anja’s answer is immediate: stress and distraction.
“Stress leads to mistakes – especially when mixed with too much wine. That’s when people forget to turn off the gas, or they touch the hot grill without gloves. The key is preparation.”
Her non-negotiable safety tips include:
- Keeping distance from buildings, trees, and hedges
- Having a fire extinguisher nearby
- Using proper heat-resistant gloves
- And making sure no children are close to the grill
“They might complain, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. I don’t want to have regrets later.”
