Het EU Ecolabel is opgericht in 1992 en heeft tot doel om de ontwikkeling en het gebruik van goederen en diensten die milieubehoud vooropstellen, te bevorderen.
Producten met het EU Ecolabel-logo worden beschouwd als de meest milieuvriendelijke in hun respectievelijke categorie. Het keurmerk wordt verleend door een onafhankelijke organisatie, en is gebaseerd op ecologische criteria die alle fasen van een productlevenscyclus omvatten. Deze criteria worden vastgesteld door een panel met diverse belanghebbenden, en ze worden officieel bekrachtigd door de Europese Commissie.
