EN 511 Standard – Cold Protection in Safety Gloves

EN 511 is the European standard that specifies requirements and testing methods for safety and work gloves designed to protect against cold risks. It ensures that gloves provide reliable insulation and water resistance in low-temperature environments, safeguarding hands from frostbite and performance loss.

What Does EN 511 Cover?

EN 511:2006 applies to safety and work gloves used in cold environments, whether due to weather conditions or industrial processes. It evaluates three key protective properties:

  • Resistance to Convective Cold – Protection against cold air and wind.
  • Resistance to Contact Cold – Protection when handling cold objects or surfaces.
  • Resistance to Water Penetration – Ability to prevent water from entering the glove. Testing resistance to permeability by water is done when relevant.

How EN 511 Testing Works

The standard presened with the different test criterias.

Gloves certified under EN 511 receive a three-digit code (e.g., EN 511: 231), where each digit represents performance in one of the tests:

Level of Protection 0 1 2 3 4
A. Convective cold
(Thermal insulation ITR/m²)
I < 0.10 0.10 ≤ I < 0.15 0.15 ≤ I < 0.22 0.22 ≤ I < 0.30 0.30 ≤ I
B. Contact cold
(Thermal resistance R/m²)
R < 0.025 0.025 ≤ R < 0.050 0.050 ≤ R < 0.100 0.100 ≤ R < 0.150 0.150 ≤ R
C. Water penetration
(5 min)
Penetration No penetration

A: Convective Cold Resistance (0–4)

Determines how well the glove insulates against cold air and wind. Higher numbers mean better insulation.

EN ISO 511 Convective Cold.jpg

This test is performed by placing the glove on an electrically heated hand and measuring the power required to maintain the hand's temperature between 30°C and 35°C in a controlled environment of -20°C. The more energy needed to maintain the hand’s temperature, the lower the convective cold classification. The highest level of protection is 4.

B: Contact Cold Resistance (0–4)

Determines how effectively the glove resists heat transfer when in direct contact with cold surfaces.

EN ISO 511 Contact Cold.jpg

In this test, a glove sample is placed between two metal plates at different temperatures. The test measures the temperature drop of the glove sample, which is then used to calculate the thermal resistance (R). A higher R-value indicates better insulation against the cold, the highest level of protection is 4.

C: Water Penetration Resistance (0 or 1)

Indicates whether water penetrates the glove within 5 minutes. The water penetration test is a "pass or fail" test.

EN ISO 511 Water Pentetration Resistance.jpg

To determine water resistance, the glove is immersed in water for 5 minutes. If the glove maintains its impermeability, it passes with a level 1. Gloves that fail are assigned a level 0, while an "X“ indicates the glove has not been tested.

0 = Water penetrates
1 = No water penetration

Example of How to Interpret an EN 511 Result

Exampel result EN 511: 231

2 = Moderate protection against convective cold
3 = High protection against contact cold
1 = Waterproof for at least 5 minutes

Why EN 511 Matters

  • Safety in Extreme Conditions: Prevents frostbite and cold-related injuries in harsh environments.
  • Performance and Comfort: Maintains dexterity and grip even in freezing temperatures.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance: Certified gloves meet EU PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 requirements.

Typical Applications and Industries

How to Choose the Right EN 511 Gloves

  • For outdoor work in wind and snow: Look for high convective cold resistance (Level 3–4).
  • For handling frozen materials: Prioritize high contact cold resistance (Level 3–4).
  • For wet conditions: Ensure water penetration resistance = 1.
