EN 511 Standard – Cold Protection in Safety Gloves
EN 511 is the European standard that specifies requirements and testing methods for safety and work gloves designed to protect against cold risks. It ensures that gloves provide reliable insulation and water resistance in low-temperature environments, safeguarding hands from frostbite and performance loss.
What Does EN 511 Cover?
EN 511:2006 applies to safety and work gloves used in cold environments, whether due to weather conditions or industrial processes. It evaluates three key protective properties:
- Resistance to Convective Cold – Protection against cold air and wind.
- Resistance to Contact Cold – Protection when handling cold objects or surfaces.
- Resistance to Water Penetration – Ability to prevent water from entering the glove. Testing resistance to permeability by water is done when relevant.
How EN 511 Testing Works

Gloves certified under EN 511 receive a three-digit code (e.g., EN 511: 231), where each digit represents performance in one of the tests:

A: Convective Cold Resistance (0–4)
Determines how well the glove insulates against cold air and wind. Higher numbers mean better insulation.

This test is performed by placing the glove on an electrically heated hand and measuring the power required to maintain the hand's temperature between 30°C and 35°C in a controlled environment of -20°C. The more energy needed to maintain the hand’s temperature, the lower the convective cold classification. The highest level of protection is 4.
B: Contact Cold Resistance (0–4)
Determines how effectively the glove resists heat transfer when in direct contact with cold surfaces.

In this test, a glove sample is placed between two metal plates at different temperatures. The test measures the temperature drop of the glove sample, which is then used to calculate the thermal resistance (R). A higher R-value indicates better insulation against the cold, the highest level of protection is 4.
C: Water Penetration Resistance (0 or 1)
Indicates whether water penetrates the glove within 5 minutes. The water penetration test is a "pass or fail" test.

To determine water resistance, the glove is immersed in water for 5 minutes. If the glove maintains its impermeability, it passes with a level 1. Gloves that fail are assigned a level 0, while an "X“ indicates the glove has not been tested.

1 = No water penetration
